To maximise the farming system and reduce food / feed miles Epicure grow most of the feed required for the livestock. The grass is cut for silage and hay and also provides grazing for the cattle through the summer. Barley, wheat, Swedes and fodder beat are grown and used for feed. The straw from the cereals is used for bedding and manure from the animals is spread back on the land closing the loop.
Epicure's energy is provided by a generator which charges battery packs to give a constant supply of electricity. The aim is to produce our own oil from oil seed rape to run the generator on. Presently we have a small wind turbine which tops the batteries up and we hope to progress to a larger turbine to provide most of our energy needs.
We are always seeking better solutions…
The trouble with renewable energy is that the source of the power such as wind for the turbine is not always available even here on top of a Wold. We are therefore looking to add photo voltaic cells (PVC) in to our system. Wood from the trees is used for heating and water heating.
